There is nothing wrong with not knowing about computer stuff. :)
What you're looking for are called "Flash-Drives" or "Jump-Drives". They cost around $12-$130, depending on how much storage you need. If your mom is a writer, 1Gb would be more then enough storage space for her. Happy Hunting!

They're called Flash Drives, or sometimes USB drives, I would recommend Radio Shack because other places only have a basic model that don't have much memory.
These drives are also good for people who work in PC and Apple computers like I do.

Others have given you some good explaination of flash drives or USB drives. I would recommend not getting one that says USB3 on it. It gives you a lot of interesting feature but it more complicated and most users will find that they don't want those features and don't know how to use them. (It has to install something on each computer it is plugged into and you might not always be able to do that on someone else's pc.
They are pretty cheap now for simple ones. I got one for my daughter at a drug store for that was $5 for 250 megabyte. Pretty outstanding deal.

Those are USB Flash drives, sometimes called thumb drives. You can buy them anywhere, even Walmart or Target. They come in different sizes & are made by many different companies. The used to come as small as 32 mb but these days they are common larger sizes. You want to make sure she has plenty of room to hold her files so I'd go for one that is at least 1 gig. They have some that you can clip to your pocket like a pen. They have others that are on a lanyard you can hang around your neck. Most people keep them on their keyring. Have fun shopping. Look at all of the different choices & you're bound to find something she'll like. Here is a link for some on bestbuy.com http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&id=pcat17071&type=page&ks=960&st=usb+memory&sc=Global&cp=1&sp=&qp=crootcategoryid%23%23-1%23%23-1%7E%7Eq757362206d656d6f7279%7E%7Ecabcat0500000%23%232%23%231k%7E%7Encabcat0504010%23%230%23%23r&list=n&usc=All+Categories&nrp=15&iht=n

I have heard them called flash drives or jump drives. Any electronics/computer store should have them: Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot, etc.
