Amazing, have our schools deteriorated to such a degree that they do not teach the most basic elements of history.

Certainly they had schools during the American War of the 1860s. They had schools since settlers first arrive here in the new world and had children with them. These schools have changed over the years and have been different in different sections of the country, but they have always been with us.

absolutely and you can thank Napolean for it. when he lost water loo he assumed it was because the public was uneducated and unable to understand rank and file and following orders so he established the first public school system as we know it. the big difference between then and now is that it was mainly voluntary. people could work without having to go to school. if you could find someone to train you in a trade, then you stayed in if you wanted or were rich enough to afford it.
