The kind of protest which took place in the 60s is no longer effective. The authorities have learned how to handle protests to minimize disruptions and media attention. A new strategy is needed to challenge the powers that be, but in the meantime, voting is a powerful statement.

Sure we all know about the war protests of the 1960's, but were they any more effective than the ones today? The US did not fully withdraw from Vietnam until 1975, about 10 years after people began protesting the US's involvement.
Most politicians only care about campaign contributions and votes, probably in that order. So a big donation from Halliburton can easily cancel out a big antiwar rally.

Look most politicians are lawyers OK , so you get their attention , they listen , then they have specialist who will help them come up with a plan to tell you things , and do things to make you think they heard what you said , then it goes right back to the same old song ,and dance , Lawyers are good at trying to make you believe their side of the story , even if it is wrong they can make it sound right , We are the jury who either buys in to their BS and rule in their favor by voting for them or we don't . Politicians only care about building their wealth , Universal health care will cause our income tax to triple , and most of the democrats stock in American Health Insurance Company will go through the roof , if you dig deep enough you can see who has stock in it , such as Hillary , Edwards , and Obama , even though this is what they call a blind trust , and they do not know what their money is invested in , Yea right , Hillary ,and Bill had a blind trust with a million or two in Wal-Mart just before Bill opened the gates for China to send our kids such safe ,and wonderful toys , with his additions to the free trade agreement , Bill is the one who stated we need bridges at our borders not fences ,and walls , look how good that has worked , Bill and hillary have millions invested in foreign currency , they also want us to convert to the euro dollar , they say it is all for the better of America , by that I guess they mean their bank , Instead of trying to get them idiots to listen we need to oust them from office every d*mn one of them and just start all over . I can not understand why democratic supporters want the government involved in health care because everything the politicians touch turns to sheyat ...We are supposed to have intelligent people running this Country yet they can not even balance a budget ....something is wrong something is very very wrong here , we need to educate our country so they can see what they are really voting for .. Politician means crook , a politicain lobbies for votes and money , non politicians it is called blackmail , and bribery , they call it pork spending when they throw in million dollar favors on a bill for their friends , If we done that to get favors it would be a criminal charge for bribing public officials , they get caught in money "scandals" we would be charged with money laundering , and tax evasion ......We as a Country need to flock to Washington DC , and clean out our houses (all of them ) wonder what would happen if absolutely no one voted at all ? but that won't happen because some vote for their friends , and others vote because they are foolish enough to believe a politicain really gives a d@mn .....

I was in school in California when the hippies were "protesting". Our teachers made them out to be heroes. I believed it until I got older and smarter. What they were really doing was mass tantrum throwing, bordering on anarchy.
If you want to really make a difference, organize "get out the vote" campaigns, write letters and send emails. Every intelligent piece of correspondence received by representatives counts as though 1000 constituants had contacted them.
Nobody really pays attention to the people out there holding signs. Except of course, the police who are stuck having to be posted at these ridiculous media-driven events. If you want your voice to be heard, do it within the system, not out on the streets.

People in government do listen to their constituents. Latest example: the hue and cry about immigration amnesty was so loud, the elected officials backed off.
The 1960's is not a good example of how to influence government. The protests and riots were orchestrated by lefties who did not want to get drafted and by the news media, particularly Walter Cronkite, who decided that the war was a loser. They were wrong.
We learned may years later that the North Vietnamese were on the verge of giving up. People like Jane Fonda and Cronkite inspired them to continue.
As a result of the US abandonment, many people were killed in Vietnam and in Laos. I don't consider that a good thing.
Today things are different. The left wing liberals in the main stream media do not have the power to manipulate the news.

15 september in DC at the whitehouse. be there or be square. expected to be the largest antiwar protest in decades, and many groups calling for impeachment are sponsoring. little over a week from now. guess we'll see.
they'll probably be expected to stand in one of those 12'x15' free-speech zones. the problem is they didn't shoot too many protesters in the old days, kent state notwithstanding. this time there is no such guarantee. anything could happen, labeled as enemy combatants could give the shrub cause to enact NSPD 51, if ya know what that is. if not google it.

Like a malarial disease, America still suffers from the convulsive chills and subsequent fevers that the hippy movement infected our society with.
While I agree with your points about America looking after itself first, and our elected officials working for the people instead of their own interests, acting like egoistic and self-absorbed 'hippies' isn't the answer.

We are all to fat an afraid. Protests like this start usually in the Universities, where kids are not suppose to be afraid and fat, to go out and challenge the establishment.
Today, it's more important to wear the newest sneakers and drive a convertible for them, then to protest.

here's my idea,
we citizens form groups of about 10,000 each by known aquaintance or neighborhoods..........each 10,000 or so citizens incorporate. by doing this we enjoy tax shelters, retirement pensions, other corp benefits and we can effectively lobby in DC, we'll have incentives to make environmental improvements, employ americans in our community all without any risk of our personal assets. if our corporation for some reason doesnt make it we can declare bankruptcy with no personal loss and pay ourselves lg corporate bonuses ( kmart paid $9 million to one corp. exec while firing employees and filing bankruptcy) our employees (us the citizens) would be our corp execs so............this plan would put us on the playing field with big business, improve our economy, our lifestyles, our environment, and our global reputation and is much more 2007ish than protesting. if you can't beat em join em

It was those people in the 60's who have caused all the subsequent problems. They wanted to change the world - and they did! Now I would like them to change it back.
