You're not alone in trying to figure out the meaning of this complicated song, lou-lou. It was written by the super-talented Cheryl Wheeler and covered by Suzy Bogguss. This is how Cheryl explains "Aces". Good luck figuring this all out:

The song is about three people: persons A, B, C. It starts with persons A & B. Person A introduces person B to person C. Persons B & C go off into the sunset.

Later, Cheryl added the fact that A & B were former lovers, and that C was a former lover of A. The singer is Person B, who A introduced to C, and then B & C became a couple. Person B is singing to Person A, who complains that they became a couple. Hence the line "You can't deal me the aces and think I wouldn't play."

Wow, that's alot to digest. Hope I didn't muddy the water too much. But you can kind of better figure it out by watching the original video, with "Aces" performed by Cheryl here:

OK, so this is my take. A & B were previous lovers, and then, maybe, they were just friends, but A still wanted a sexual relationship with B. B doesn't want that anymore, but still wants to be friends with A. When A introduces B & C to each other, maybe they (B & C) start seeing each other on the sly so that they don't hurt A's feelings, but they fall in love, and can't help themselves. Then B is feeling like she has to defend what she's done to A, because A feels like she's been betrayed by BOTH of them. B admits that she lied (probably told A she was doing something else when seeing C, etc), but that she would never want to intentionally hurt A (I would never want to do what it seems I've done). Then, kind of said to A that you can't play matchmaker, and then get mad when a match is made. And, don't let our (B & C's) relationship be the reason that A walks away from both of them, and that those friendships are forever lost. Amazing storytelling in this song. I have always loved it, and also have been a huge fan of Suzy Boguss for decades.

The only real confusing part of the song is what the "aces" represent, and whether the "old friend" is a significant other or the husband.

I believe the "aces" are a non-specific mind game where the old friend gets Suzy's character to tell a lie about something which the old friend intended to overreact upon. Suzy's chorus line indicates if she was aware that the lie she gave would be used as a mind game against their relationship, she would not have covered things up in that way.

In the bridge ("if I lied, if I knew, I was only trying to think of you") I sense that she would have done anything for this old friend, but he isn't getting exactly what he wants despite her loyalty and is willing to put their relationship on the line to get a better response.

The meaning of "Aces" is another song i believe can be used in a number of ways...it depends on the the person.

So literally an Ace is generally the best card in any game...so in the song she says "You cant deal me the Aces and think I wouldnt play; dont let this be the reason you would walk away" So you cant deal her a good hand then expect to just leave it..meaning he wouldnt play a game w/ her. they played she got a good hand and he left....

Metophorically, maybe "her old friend" is her husband, he dealt her a good hand she had fun playing and now he no longer wants to. Meaning he is leaving her. She isnt who she was, she isnt doing what he expects of her so he is done. Sounds like a couple going thru a divorce maybe they grew apart or he just doesnt want it anymore....Yes, she says she has done somethings and she has lied, but everything was in his best interest. "And if I lied, if I knew I was only trying to think of you." She did everything b/c of him even if it wasnt the way he wanted it to go....

I dunno...thats just my perception of the song...i actually had to read the words a few times (i hadnt heard the song in a long time) and thats the impression i got from it.....I love her voice and the way she put the emotion into the song...its really wonderful...yet sad!

The song you are referring to Is about a Guy blaming his girl for something he believes that she did or didn't do...He believes she cheated on him and doesn't want to talk about it...She wants to make sense of the whole thing...she doesn't want this too be the reason for him to walk out on her.........

Part of the song: I'll be there for you now
Your ready to walk out
your ready to run
Talk to me, can't you see
I would never want to do what it seems what I've done can you make sense think I would not play don't let this be the reason to walk out....................
