I feel like a retard for asking this, but I feel like a closed mouth doesn't get fed. I know people say the best way to concieve is to just have sex (I think every 2 days, or something), but what the doctor, nor any book can explain to me, is the whole ovulation/fertility thing. When are you most fertile? When does a 28 day cycle woman ovulate? Can somebody like explain it to me in layman's terms...pleeeaaasse?

Women ovulate about 12-16 days before the start of their period. This time frame is called your luteal phase, and it needs to be at least 10 days in order to conceive. Sperm lives for 5 days in the right conditions, when fertile cervical mucus is present, and the egg is only fertilizable for 24 hours after being released, so your fertile time is 5 days before ovulation up until the day afterwards.

In a regular 28 day period, with an avearge14 day luteal phase, a woman would ovulate on day 14 of her cycle (day 1 is the first day of your last period) and sex starting on day 9, up until day 15, could result in a pregnancy.

If you track ovulation and know all that for sure, then sex everyday during your fertile time is best for conceiving (assuming the man doesn't have a low sperm count, then every other day is better). Typically women don't know this for sure so that's why people say just have sex everyother day in-between periods. I got pregnant right away both times I tried by having sex everyday during my fertile time. The first month with my daughter, and the 2nd month with my current pregnancy.

I agree with what Melissa says except that the sperm DOES NOT live in the cervical mucus. If it stayed there women would never get pregnant. The sperm needs to be in the fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg, if not, by the time the egg makes it to the uterus it is dead or deteriorated. Eggs only survive for 12 hours.

Aso don't forget that if you aren't a 28 day cycle you may be having sex too early. Some women actually ovulate as late as day 23. Justa little advice--it helped me.
