If your car has a tachometer, initially use it to get an idea of how fast the engine is running. If the yellow or red zone starts at say 5,000 rpm, rev it up to around 2,500 rpm and ease out on the clutch. Not all the way out, but as you let it out, the engine will loose speed. As it does, give it more gas and release the clutch more. With a little practice you'll be able to modulate both feet so that you let the clutch out and step down on the gas pedal at the same time while keeping the engine rpm constant. You'll be able to keep the engine at 4,000 rpm fpr really quick get aways and at 2000 rpm for more lesiurely ones. Don't mash on the gas pedal and suddenly release the clutch as suggested...you'll either kill the engine and feel really embarrassed or bust a CV joint and look really stupid blocking traffic. Some kids think that squalling the tires takes a lot of technique....actually being able to maintain a constant engine rpm while releasing the clutch WITHOUT squalling the tires takes more technique. Learn to do that and when some cocky guy wants to race you leaving a stop sign, while he's setting there squalling and smoking his tires, you'll be leaving him in your dust. Just remember, whether you're in snow, mud or on dry pavement, spinning tires don't move a car forward. Good luck. Once you get going, if your car has a tachometer and you're in a really bit hurry, accellerate up to the yellow zone and not past the red zone. Red or above is dangerous for your engine and could cause expensive damage.

The more you release the clutch the better your acceleration in first will be. I have a 97 Cavalier 5 speed and a 98 ford windstar minivan. When I do drive our cavalier I get much better accleration in our little 4 cyclinder stick. Ive left my husband in the dust when he drives the van. lol I love Standard trasnmissions.
