I'd like to go for a few months, camping, staying in hostels, getting the eurail pass and doing many tourist type activities. Any ideas??

Your information is rather vague, but I give you a guess.
These prices are in US $ and for traveling in the smaller towns in Western Europe, if you just stay in capitals, (London, Paris, Rome and so on,) you will need about half as much again, traveling in the former communist countries is cheaper, you will get by with less, I do not know how much less.

Eurail passes cost $1000 for two months, (see the site: http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/passes/eurail_index.htm)
Staying in hostels, eating from supermarkets, (cooking your own meals,) and being tight-handed when it comes to sightseeing and drinking about $50 a day minimum. (This is a real bottom price, most people can not manage for this little.)
Staying in hostels, cooking your own meals but going out for dinner or drinks every now and again, doing a moderate amount of sightseeing, and some activities, about $100 a day.

If you go for hotels and eating out all the time, the amount per day doubles again for moderate hotels, more if you want better class hotel and/or food.

Camping will not save you a lot, unless you go to the most basic campsites.
And you will be burdened by camp gear, have less safety for leaving things when going out for the day or night and less comfort.
Big parts of Europe have weather that is unpredictable, and rain is likely any time of the year, making camping something only people dedicated to that way of life can enjoy.

Your flight will come on top of this. Anything from $700 low season New York to London, $1200 will give you a decent selection, but you can easily spend $3000 too.

Plan on $100-$150 per day, not including your airfare ($700-$1000 depending on when and where you fly), and not counting a railpass. If you don't get a railpass, plan on at least another $50-$200 on the days you travel.
With this amount of money you can sightsee, dine, and stay in hostels if you're by yourself or share a room with a friend you're traveling with in hotels (if they bring the same amount).
Have fun! Definitely do it if you can!

A decent trip depending on how long can range anywhere from $1,400 to $3,000. I would suggest going with a tour company they include airfare, hotel, daily breakfast and a few attractions I would recommend contiki travel,EF college breaks or STA travel the allow you to make monthly payments and have different types of tours but they do have an age limit of 18-35.

My friend did this for 2 months in France and Italy (without camping) and came back 5 grand lighter for it. It's really easy to underestimate what you will spend so be careful. Eastern Europe is way cheaper. I'm planning a trip there myself right now. Probably in Macedonia, thanks to a tip I got here.
I travel a lot and always spend more than I would have thought. It's good to have a little breathing room.
Good luck with your planning and enjoy your trip!!
