How did ascertain your chinese month and day sign, with their elements,

The chinese astrology for me has always been the vaguest as it assumes that everyone born in a certain year are of the same mentality, but in western we know that there is alot more to that, now if it is possible to narrow the chinese astrology down to a month or a day, then I believe it to will contribute to what I have learnt and what I am yet to learn.
