It all depends on who you ask. Every one has their own biases, myself included. My personal preference is electrical engineering. Why? The electrical engineers have a much better chance to find jobs in any other field, they are more flexible and versatile. If they end up bored with one job, they can go pretty much everywhere.
The software engineers are in a niche market, and they can branch out in their niche, which is still relatively smaller than electrical engineering.

I am a software engineer, so I can only tell you that if you like maths, maybe software is the way to go. As for the future, it really depends on where you are going to work. I am sure that you will something that interest you in both professions.
you could work for AT&T or Pixar or SUN for example and you will do completly different things.
if it is the money that interest you, I have 5 years experiance in IT and earn 90K

I guess that depends on what "preferable" means. Is SW engineering more sale-able/profitable? Maybe where are you located? In the NE of the United States SW is beginning to take off but EEs are still in high demand. A good EE can find gainful employment in any economic situation where IMHO a SW geek may see hard times depending on what is currently "in vogue".
