Friends who have them say they can't get parts (upgrade or replacements) easily or cheaply, especially for laptops that are not the latest model.
Wouldn't buy one second hand myself.

Nope. Very good computers overall.
They did have some not so great history in the past, but the whole corporate scenario has changed to a customer satisfaction impetis.
We have 7 Dells in the family. None of them has ever had one problem. One laptop is 7 years old. The newest is my PC which is a Dell XPS 410. Without monitor it cost $900 at last xmas time.
Go to the Dell site and "create" an account. They will email you with all the sales. Watch the sales and you'll get a good buy.
Hope this helps.

relies upon on what you get. each and every laptop employer makes a undesirable batch each and every now and then. I even have not at all been partial to Dells. I even have had the two a Dell own laptop and computer and neither extremely inspired me. I even have acquaintances with Dells who use them on an well-known basis and that they run exceedingly. I prefer HP yet it extremely is basically me. I even have continuously had solid good fortune with them. I even have heard that Dell is making some rather solid laptops now.

I have a dell Inspiron 8500. It is a nice machine. The M key stopped working. I called Dell and asked if they could send me a replacement keyboard - a replacement for the laptop keyboard, not an external keyboard. They said yes so I placed the order. I thought about it for a few minutes and I called back to verify that indeed I was going to get a replacement for the laptop keyboard and not an external keyboard. I was assured once again that I would get a replacement for the laptop, not an external plug in keyboard.
One week later I received an external plug in keyboard and when I called to complain and try to get a replacement for the laptop keyboard (that I had already been told 2 times I was going to get on the order) I was told that a replacement keyboard was not available. So I switched to HP - I have had my fill of Dell.

Not at all. I have 2 Dell notebook computers, one of them is 8 years old, both have been very reliable. I've never even needed to contact anything for tech support.

Dell is overpriced and suffers bad quality issues - check hp or toshiba - both of them beat dell both with price and quality presently

While I wont call their support for home users great, its the best of the bunch. They do stand behind their products, for how long depends on how much warrantee you want to pay for. I have bought (for our company) over a thousand over the past eight years and still recomend them to anyone who asks.
