be careful w/ clothes... sometimes those ultrasounds can read out funny pictures and get the sex wrong!! so don't go overboard, leave the tags on, and start an envelope w/ the receipts!! Plus don't get too many cute newborn or 0-3 month outfits... they just sleep so much and end up wearing their sleepers all the time.
essentials:
...breastfeeding: book - pillow - bra pads (but wait on the bra, you just don't know what size you'll need) - lanolin (Lansinoh or PureLan brands only)
...carseat
...clothes- sleepers, onesies, socks
...hygeine: diaper cream, wash, diapers, wipes,
...stroller, sling, mei tai or wrap
every thing else can either wait or you can improvise with... like towels - baby towels are cute and I had plenty ... but really a towel is a towel, it's not a mandatory thing!!

I started buying things for baby before I was ever pregnant or married. But thats just because I knew some day I would be a mother and a wife. Some little clothes and things.
We bought the crib the week of the ultrasound. I went out and bought the outfit for him to come home in the week after the ultrasound.
I dont think I ever reached a point where I said "okay now iam going to buy stuff." although once I knew what I was having I stopping buying bi-gender things and bought for a boy.

Once I found out the gender I'd buy a cute outfit whenever I'd see one but you really should start collecting diaper coupons and buying diapers. I'm not talking NB size. I'm talking maybe size 1 or 2 or even 3. Babies stay in size 3 for a long time. You can NEVER have too many diapers. Essentials for your registry would be things like a bathtub, baby toiletries, blankets, footy PJ's, onsies, baby laundry soap. Don't go crazy on all the cutesy stuff. They never end up using it.

Congrats on your first pregnancy. I bought my first baby outfit when I first foundout I was pregnant, but it was yellow with little ducks on it. So a boy or girl can wear it. For some women they need to buy a little baby item or outfit and it makes the whole pregnancy thing feel more real. Once you go to a store like babies r us you'll know exactly what you need. Don't buy too much though if your having a shower.

I am very sorry for your loss. I too have lost loved ones on Christmas and can relate to your sorrow. I can only give you answers from a certain perspective. As a Christian, I believe that if you are a believer in Christ your soul goes to Heaven. If not then, well.... That being said, I almost lost my life five years ago. I was very near death, within less than an hour the doctors said. I remember being very "at peace" with the whole idea of passing away. Did I float out of my body or see a light at the end of a tunnel? No. But being that close to death, I had accepted and welcomed the idea. I was with my mother when she died and her last words were, "Tell my children that I love them very much, I really want to go be with my parents now". She was at peace too. I don't know if this has helped you at all. I apologize if it hasn't.

Only things i bought after finding out the sex-was some cute outfits just to play with.. Maybe 3 or 4.. I didn't buy ANYTHING else untill my 3 baby showers were done with b/c i got most of the things i needed from that..
As for the baby registry - i kept it up to date with everything i would need, it wasn't just a guide for peoples shopping, but for me to keep track of what i'd need..
After my baby showers, i bought 1 pack of newborn diapers ( i didn't know how big he was going to be.. he was 8lbs and that newborn pack he wore for a week, then i had to get size1) I got sensitive wipes, diaper rash ointment and soothing cd's.. everything else was taken care of =]

I started buying stuff as soon as I found out I was pregnant with both my children. Get white, yellow, or green if you don't know what the baby is. Things you will need are:
diapers, wipes, powder, soap, wash clothes, bibs, diaper bag, sleepers, onesies, socks, hats, blankets, crib, car seat, crib sheets, stroller, shampoo, cotton balls, high chair, swing, bouncy seat, dreft laundry soap, stain remover, the list goes on...
If you plan to breastfeed, get a nursing pillow such as Cuddle-U or Boppy. That will be your best friend and really help your back!

I bought nothing because I had 2 baby showers. I might have bought a couple of outfits on sale once I found out the sex.
I would definatly register for a bumbo seat. That thing is amazing. I take it everywhere with me. My son can sit up supprted and loves to sit up, so the Bumbo seat is perfect. I take it to the pool, lake, friends house, outside.

Buy a swing, my 3.5 month old loooves it and will sleep all night there.
Buy a sleep positioner to keep the baby from rolling onto their tummy
Onesies are the best!!! don't bother with alot of fancy clothes, they potty toooo much to fuss with it so many times a day when you can just do a couple snaps and be on your way.
Dr. Browns bottles are really good, they help with air intake
Huggies work the best for me as far as diapers (DONT BUY GENERIC if you can avoid it, they are paper thin and baby will leak through, plus they arent as flexible)
Convertible car seats are nice to have for when the baby gets a lil bigger because they grow with the baby (but at first I would def. use the infant car seat)
Get a baby tub with a lil hamick thing on it (it kind of attaches to the side of the tub and baby can just sit comfortably, ours looks like a duck and it is a blue tub, maybe you can find it)
Hooded towels are great
Desitin is great for diaper rashes
DON'T BUY BABY POWDER WITH TALC (I think the kind I mean is with cornstarch or something, it says on the front) Talc is bad for the baby I hear.
The book Baby 411 is a great reference guide
The video Happiest Baby on the Block is also a great reference tool for calming the baby down and putting them to sleep.
Baby Oil with head and shoulders is great for getting rid of cradle cap if they get that
Fisher price makes a nice highchair that can be attached to any seat as opposed to a stand alone one that takes up more room.
Sometimes baby likes to fall asleep to "white noise" like static on tv or radio, or the sound of the vacuum
Get one of them Snugli's (it looks like a baby backpack, lol) She loves it, plus you can carry her and do things at the same time because it keeps your hands free!
Hope some of this helps!! Good Luck!!

I started getting things together about my seventh month. I received many useful things at my shower, but what I didn't get is what I bought. Crib, extra blankets, bottles, bibs, sleepers, teething rings, rattles/small toys, high chair, car seat.....all the basics.
