You would be xx cm dilated and xx% effaced. The opening of the cervix is dilated - it goes 1-10. Effacement is the thinning of the cervix - it goes 0-100%. This is just your body's way of preparing for the delivery. Being dilated and effaced does not mean you will necessarily go into labor anytime soon and not being dilated and effaced doesn't mean you have weeks to go. Every one is different (I for example, was 3cm and 70% effaced at my 36 week appointment and was sooo excited that I was SURE I would deliver early and I stayed that way for 2 more visits. It wasn't until week 39 that I was a full 4cm dilated and I only gave birth 3 days early :))

Dilated. This means that your cervix is opening. Your cervix needs to dilate, open, and thin out, efface which is shown in %, in order to give birth. There are also stages at which your baby goes through which will go from from either 3 or 2 to -2 or -3. That is when your baby is descending enough to come out. Hope this helps :)

effacement is the thinning out of the cervix, and dialation is the actual opening up of the cervix

Well, look at you on your high horse! Really, what's the point in opening a thread to bash people. Does it make you feel better?
