281 and 1604 area is the best. (In my opinion)
It's in North East ISD - One of the 2 best school districts in town
Everything is here -
-Hospital (North Central Baptist) - Stone Oak
-Doctors - Stone Oak
-Grocerys
- HEB (281 @ 1604)
- Sun Harvest (Northwoods)(Same Area)
-Shopping
- Northwoods Shopping Center has Barnes and Noble, Old Navy, Office Max, Ross, Bombay, Radio Shack
-Movies
-Northwoods Movie theatre

Neighborhoods::
Anywhere in that area is going to be good. I don't know what your budget is but you are going to find anything from 110,000 all the way up to 500,000 in this area. The neighborhoods are safe and clean and a lot are almost brand new which is better because the homes are move in ready.

Good Luck

San Antonio is a great place to raise a family. There are lots of great neighborhoods however because of the rapid growth of the city there are some parts of town experiencing horrible traffic problems.
My recommendation for now would be to move to the northwest side, somewhere near Fiesta Texas. Though this part of town is very popular you will be right on two good highways, IH 10 and Loop 1604. Stay away from 281 N and also the Alamo Ranch (SeaWorld) areas of town. The traffic is horrible!
Welcome to San Antonio!

I live in the Sea World area and the traffic isn't here it is between Culebra and I-35 (N). The safest part of the city is The Sea World Area (according to City-data.com ) zip codes 78245, 78251, and 78253. There are a lot of amenities in the Sea World area, we have a new General Hospital coming on line in 2008, We already had The Baptist Medical systems in place and expanding to accommodate the new Hospital, We have MicroSoft service center, CTI, Washington Mutual, many new restraints, car washes, auto parts places, HEB Plus (super sized grocery store), Wal-mark Super store, Kohl's, several banks, Several new schools either already built or are coming on line with in the next few months, 15 minutes from down town San Antonio. There are several city parks in the area as well. I brought up three children in San Antonio. This is a great place to live and have a family, as your children get a little bit older they will be going to school in the number one rated school district in San Antonio. This is the Northside Independent School District NISD If you choose not to live in this area the second school district that is also very good is the North East Independent School District (NEISD) I know hat it is early but welcome to San Antonio

I have lived all over the city, but if you have small children I think the most important thing to think about is scholls. Alamo Heights, Northeast, and Northside school districts are best. We recently moved back into San Antonio and picked the Stone Oak area purely because of the schools. Stone Oak is just north of 1604 and close to 281. Another responder said to avoid 281, however, during rush hours the difference in travel time between I 10 and 281 is about 2 minutes going into downtown. The traffic on all routes out of the city is pretty heavy on all routes inside Loop 410 during the evening rush.

By the way I also lived in Alabama, and went to college and graduate school at Alabama.

Good luck with your move!

EDIT: ffperki (below) has given you good information, however, there are some things to consider about his crime statistics. In 78251 for example there is a lower overall crime rate than some other parts of the city, but the personal crime rates, especially murder and rape are higher in that area than the national average. In North Central 78258 for example the overall crime rate is higher, but is mostly related to theft, especially shoplifting from the larger number of stores in the area, and the personal crime rate again rape and murder rate is significantly below the national average. You have to be careful when comparing crime rates to look at the types of crime for the area.

I live North Central and I love it. But, please don't move here because it's the best kept secret and we don't want anyone else now since it is such a good secret. Don't let it slip out. Shhhh. It's got this great medical area and it's not near as hard to get in and out of as the bigger Northwest Medical center. In fact alot of doctors are moving from the Northwest Medical Center to the North Central location between Blanco and Redland Oaks, but shhhh, don't tell anyone about it because it is so pretty and has the best rated schools and the teachers give the students such good educations that they have higher scores than students in other areas of the city statistically, but don't tell anyone that either. Shhhhh. I didn't tell you anything.

this is thrilling to stroll and save El Mercado and devour lunch or dinner there. I propose seeing the IMAX movie with regard to the Alamo, then seeing the Alamo itself. there is likewise a intense-high quality park you cancontinual that connects each and every of the missions. Buckhorn Museum is downtown besides, and this is surprisingly neat. sturdy toddlers museum around the line from that besides. flow to Gruene, walk around the shops and devour on the Gristmill (sturdy foodstuff, super river perspectives) in case you opt to sit down down back for some, flow to Dave and Busters and supply them a handful of quarters. they have an impressive resturant besides. On 10 west precise out of the loop, there's a sturdy place that has putt-putt, flow-cart, batting cages, etc. yet another sturdy city to flow to is Bandera, very old west finding place, and additionally you will see community cowboys using thier horses on the city to hit the watering holes. Take the youngsters to the Magic Time gadget for dinner one night, they are going to like it! have exciting!
