My check engine light came on and I strongly assume it's a pretty serious engine issue being as they have been before. I'm used to dishing out around $300 - $450 when this happens. When it comes to engine work in particular, is Big 10 Tires comparable to a smaller, local mechanic for example? How about compared to Firestone or Kaufmann Tire?

A check engine light doesn't necessarily mean a serious engine problem.

Check engine lights can be triggered due to simple things such as not tightening your gas cap, or a dirty air filter to things that are more complicated like and O2 sensor.

I recommend taking the car to a parts place like Autozone, and they can pull the code to determine why the check engine light turned on. They will do this for free. Once you have the code, you can get a better idea of what is wrong and what might be necessary to fix the problem.

They're ever bit as capable.
Also, you may have something as simple as an oxy sensor gone bad.
Not a big problem, just have it checked.
