Because real reality is so boring it would never make it as a TV show. Watching someone channel surf and eat potato chips will not get ratings...however, watching morbidly obese people on a cross country hike is always a good time, bonus points if one of them collapses and needs an ambulance. That is some titillating TV!

1. Reality shows are heavily edited before airing on TV (except for live shows, of course).
2. Participants play unnatural caricatures of themselves.
3. A lot of it is scripted and rehearsed. If you watch BB live feeds, you sometimes see the HOH do a competition intro more than once before the producers are satisfied.
On the other hand... is it just me, or is real life becoming more like reality TV? lol

Because if it were actual reality...no one would watch it..it would be depressing..like the real world..pls...that aint real...I can live in an ill apt. nicely decorated/furnished with people my own age, they will hand me some job most people that age could never land, and i will party in the hottest clubs, sleep with all my roomates, go back home and get money from doing talk shows and books.
The real world would be...follow someone as they struggle to get a job, keep it, pay the rent, electricity, gas, buy food, try to scrounge up extra for nice clothes and a night out, food, get all of their chores done, laundry, dishes, supermarket shopping cooking, cleaning vaccuuming, and have bad hair days.
Reality shows were created to brainwash young people even more than they are. OMG...I love sarah from the real world..cause ummm cause shes SO much like me...and ashlee simpson...LOL.

Because no matter how much they want to make "reality tv", it has to be tweaked to get ratings. For TV land, it's all about ratings. Some people's realities can be exciting and unreal and made for tv, but no matter what, there's directors and producers who have this vision of what they want. So it always ends up being someone's creation, not reality.

because it's still "TV" and if your parents were anything like mine, they told you nothing on TV was "real" anyways..........
a more refined view is basically what everyone else has been saying about selling commercial time, alternatives, etc.........the truth is, outside of sports (and even those are under scrutiny nowadays), all entertainment is supposed to be an escape from reality, from our everyday lives.......the is the whole reason for plays, operas, movies, comic books, video games, and yes "reality TV"...........just because they dress it up as "real ppl" getting their 15mins doesnt make it any less staged

It's because the networks have to sell "commercial" time to survive. People are still into the American Idol hype. I've never watched that or any "reality" show. Same for wrestling.

Because real life actually sucks! Who wants to watch somebody taking a dump, or reading, or playing a video game, or exercising?
Why do you think Soap Operas have lasted so long? People love the dirt!

they designed the show to attract and maintain an audience. If they just show a boring reality, no one would watch it and they would lose a lot of money.

If it was close to reality, it would be too boring to make a show out of.
