Not that I'm justifying it, but people tend to accept what they know best. White people made Jesus white because we'd all like to think that we look like the savior of the world. : )
Another example, I live in a community that's highly hispanic, and I'm fairly used to seeing black portrayals of Jesus, but I saw a Chinese one awhile back, and it really threw me for a loop. I mean, logically I know that's it's not any more false than a white Jesus, but it was hard for me to accept.
Good question!

Throughout the years white men have written the history books , made the movies and painted the pictures. I doubt that Moses skin color was the same as Charlton Heston. It's like watching a movie about the ancient Egyptians or the Roman empire and everyone is speaking with a British accent. Julius Ceasar didn't have a British accent, I guarantee it.

In movies: Hollywood has consistently used white actors for Asians, native Americans or other races. This is probably due to availability of talent and discrimination in the starting years. (to be fair, Hollywood has also pushed to end discrimination in many ways.)
In many paintings, espcially the ones from the middle ages, the artists without thinking assume that Jesus looked like them. This oversight is natural in that many of the artists had not traveled in the middle east and would not have been overly aware of racial differences.

He is nearly always portrayed as a white man here ... this country/this culture. We like others who are similar to us.
(to read more about the psychology of religion, go to http://psychwww.com/psyrelig/)
According to theologian James Cone, "For whites to find him with big lips and kinky hair is as offensive as it was for the Pharisees to find him partying with tax-collectors." Go to http://www.rejesus.co.uk/expressions/faces_jesus/gallery/black.html & you will see artwork portraying a black Jesus ... from the earliest of times.
Cone also says "God is whatever color God needs to be in order to let people know they're not nobodies, they're somebodies."

That is not true how Jesus look. It is only an imagination from the maker of false stories about Jesus.
