Personally I think it goes back to the Bible and the start of the new planting season for all the crops the children of Isreal planted, Its a new beginning and everybody gets a new start. I know from the Bible that every 50th year at the start all land reverted back to its original owner and all slaves were set free, it was called the year of Jubilee. When Christ comes for his Church that will be a Jubilee thats for sure, A great day for Christians and a terrible day for anyone left behind. If you are not a Christian I would get my Bible out and start reading about it, its not a coincidence that this ?? of yours came to me, there are no accidents with Jesus Christ, If you are not a believer and would like to be saved just say this simple Prayer believing in Jesus, he died on a cross for your sins and mine, Just say Dear Jesus, I just ask you right now to come into my heart and save me. I believe you are the son of God and that you came to earth to die on a cross as a perfect sacrifice for my sins, I believe you rose from the grave the third day to wash away my sins, I confess and admit right now that I am a sinner in need of a Saviour, I Pray this believing in myJesus'name,Amen. If you said this Prayer with a sincere heart believing you now have been born again into the Kingdom of God. Praise the Lord, now get a Bible and start reading, find a Church and start praising God with other believers. If you have any ?? just send me an email. Its a great day in the Lord, Amen, This could be coming up the best new year day you ever had, God Bless

because i think it was a religious thing. Not sure. But I know for muslims, the start of the new muslim year is a religious event. so maybe it started off like that and eventually it turned into just another excuse to get drunk.
