I need suggestions for an upscale restaurant in San Francisco, with a view of the ocean. To be more specific, I'm looking for maybe something on a bluff over the ocean, or on the beach, NOT a restaurant on top of a skyscraper. Anyone have any ideas?

Hands down, the best view in San Francisco is here, check it out: http://www.greensrestaurant.com/. Yes, its a vegetarian restaurant, but the food is so incredibly good and the setting is so spectacular that even carnivores love it. You will need a reservation, though.

If you can't get into Greens, I agree with Slanted Door above too, which also requires a reservation.

Skip the Cliff House. It has been getting by for years on location and view alone, and the food really stinks.

For a view of the ocean, I think you only have three choices. The Cliff House on Point Lobos and the Beach Chalet on The Great Highway. The third restaurant is just up the street from the Cliff House but I can't think of the name. I hear that the Seal Rock Inn across the street from the Cliff House has good omelets but I wouldn't say that it's upscale nor do I know if they have a view of the ocean.

You might also consider the Ritz-Carleton, Half Moon Bay.

Bon appetit!

This may not be your classic SF "view" restaurant, but there's a great place in the Ferry Building called "The Slanted Door." Great food, atmosphere, and it's right on the water. We've been there a couple of times, and it's really good. (And I didn't think I would even like Vietnamese food!) Plus, there are a lot of shops to explore, and great people watching. You can even take the Ferry afterward for a great view of the Bay. On weekends, there's a wonderful farmer's market -- great samples, and fresh (but pricey) produce. Lots of restaurants buy at the market. Go -- you'll have a really great time, I'm sure. (I don't have any stake in the restaurant -- just enjoy the Ferry Building and its shops)

The Cliff House
The Beach Chalet
Both of the above offer great views of the Pacific.

Greens in Ft. Mason - Beautiful views, incredible vegetarian food.

McCormick & Kuleto's-good seafood with a view of the bay and a beautiful interior to boot!

Or across the bay with a wonderful view of the city.
Skates on the Bay in Berkley
Guaymus in Tiburon

If you are in to Chinese food, I have one suggestion. There is a Chinese restaurant called HongKong East Ocean Seafood Restaruant in Emeryville, right off Powerll street. It's view is spectecular and amazing. You can go either dim sum or dinner and the food is good. It's totally worth it.
