I don't want Tivo or Direct TV or the one from my cable provider. I'm looking for a DVR that I can set up myself to record programs at given times just like a VCR. I don't need some company recording programs for me. I also do not want a used unit. I don't need something that will record 180 hours. I have about three shows per day to record and then they would get deleted right after being watched. I'm just looking for something simple that would be an upgrade to a VCR. I've tried to find info on the web, but so far just keep coming up with Tivos, Direct TV, cable providers, and DVD recorders.

Is there anything out there like what I'm looking for?

Also, I'm not looking for something that is HD, or like $800. 80 Gigs is way more than I need, I could do with 10 (and even that is too much) if there are any out there like that.

Something around $200 or less is what I need.

You can go to Walmart and get one for about $300 (see first link). They also have one for $238 but I wouldn't recommend that one.

Your other options are to build one yourself or buy a Windows media center computer with a TV tuner and TV out.

If you do a google for: pvr diy you will find lots of links about building your own DVR.

10GB? That's, what, between 5 and 10 hours of TV? Just use a VCR in that case.

You can get a TV card for your PC and some of them come with DVR software, or if you have XP Media Center or Vista Home Premium, it has DVR software built-in. I don't know if it actually downloads a TV schedule and uses that, or if you basically have to configure it VCR-style. But if you're only recording a few shows, that might OK.

There's also MythTV, which is an application you install on top of Linux (different OS for your PC) but it's definitely not a project for someone who isn't very comfortable with computers and has never used Linux before.

Since you are looking for a NO MONTHLY charge DVR then I would suggest you take a look at these links below. Some are for prebuilt DVRs that have no monthly charges and others are for making your OWN DVR out of a PC.

Check out these links below, then if you have any further questions please feel free to send me an email. Also you can check out http://www.dvrplayground.com and look in there Homebrew and DIY Section for more info.

Here are a few links I woud recommend reading to give you more insight.:

The monolith site shows all the functionality of a Pre-built MythTV box, If you do not want to build your own DVR/PVR then I would recommend this route.
