I am 26 and have never been to the gynecologist. I have also never been sexually active, and never had any problems. I have recently been having problems with my menstrual cycle though, and want to set up an appt, and I will.

The thing is, I am scared, not just of the doctor visit but that the dr. will scold me for never getting checked anyway. I know that this sounds childish but I have always been that way about doctors and medicine and such. Luckily, I have never been a sickly person.

I definitely plan to go to the doctor and start getting checkups. I just wanted to know if it is that uncommon that women wait long after they are 18 to go to the gyno. It is bad, what should I expect?

The Rule is that you are suppose to go at age 18 or when you have sex...generally which ever comes first....I am late on my gyno appt and my dr said woman under 30 should be going every yr....so i have an appt next month...i hate these appts, but recently my sisters paps have come back irregular, so i think its a good idea for me to get checked out...if you dr scolds you just tell him/her the truth: your not sexually active and didnt realize it was a huge deal...they should be a bit understanding...

Good Luck!

I doubt it is uncommom that women wait until after 18 or even 21. After 25 it I think that is little bit more rare, but women still do it. Alot of girls wait after 18 b/ alot of girls are not sexually active until 18.

I am 23 and will probably have my appointment with my college gynecologist this year. I most likely would not have made the appointment however I had to go there to give them my medical records and a nurse told me about it.
I think the doctor will tell you 26 is waiting a bit long but I doubt you are the only one. And the doctor is not allowed to yell at b/ that is unprofessional.

Also if you know you don't have any problems then thats a good reason for waiting this long. I think doctors and health experts tell everybody this is to catch women who really should see a doctor right away and they can't tell which women should see a doctor which ones don't really need one after their first check up.

I am not saying everyone should think there healthy and wait a long time however you did and it sounds legitimate to have waited that long.

Don't feel bad I felt this way about doctors too. And i am like the shyest and quietest person you could ever meet. If I didn't get pregnant when I was 15, and didnt become sexually active I too probably would not have went for my visits, but however. I am 25 now, and everything will be ok. Get a woman doctor, because they are more understanding, and easy on your gentle parts. At your first visit, they will probably give you a questionarre to fill out, asking you things like the date of your last period, the last time you had a checkup, and just be honest, if you ever been pregnant, dose your anyone in your family have highblood pressure, breast cancer, ect., IF you can go with a friend or a sister, to take keep you company while you wait, but you will be fine. When you finally meet with the doctor, they'll weigh you, take a urine sample, check your breast for lumps. I have to be honest the hardest part of the visit, will be your pap smear, because you never had one, and your a virgin, it is gonna hurt a little bit, when they stick the clamp in you. But just relax and breathe, it will be over in minutes.. SO good luck. I hope this helps you.

Twenty six and never been? It doesn't matter if you're sexually active or not. You should go if you are having problems with your cycle. They may prescribe you birth control to get you on a set cycle. It isn't a bad thing. I've been on it for years to balance my hormones. I waited until I was 20 to go. I'm 23 now. You do need to go for a check up to make sure everything is all good and normal. It was a little scary for my first time going as well. I still always get nervous a little. It isn't bad and scary... maybe just a little uncomfortable. I have found that going to a lady doctor makes it a little easier. Good luck!

my aunt had her first GYN visit at 35. it is uncommon but happens. don't worry it isn't all that bad, just make sure to think about (and write them down) questions you want to know about.it is important to get these check ups even if you are not sexually active .cancer does not come only if you are having sex
