I knit as a hobby and have ammassed a lot of pieces that I am going to sell at a craft show. Some of the scarves are made of chenille and are quite long. Beautiful colors, hand-dyed yarn. The yarn cost about $25.

How much would you pay?

I am a vendor at numerous Art Fairs and Sheep and Wool Festivals. I spin my own yarns and then weave or knit with them. I generally charge $40 for a scarf that is 32-36", $45 for a 42" and $55 for a 48". My handspun yarns are priced similar to yarn store yarns. Unfortunately many people, at least in my area, Michigan, are not willing to pay big bucks for scarves. If I price them more conservatively I sell them, if too high I just carry them from show to show. Unfortunately there are a lot of people at craft shows that sell handmade items for the cost of the yarn, which is often cheap yarn, and make it harder for those of us that use nicer yarns. I have seen alot of scarves for $11 at craft shows. I find that Art Fairs, rather than craft shows/bazaars bring higher prices, but the booth fees are also higher. If your yarn was $25, I would ask at least $40.

If they're someone else's pattern or design, you're not allowed to profit. But if you came up with the pattern, you should charge at least $50.00, though you may not get it at a craft sale. My mother does the church-basement type sales and she charges exactly the cost of the yarn. She doesn't make back her table fee, but it gets the scarves around peoples' necks (and socks on their feet, and potholders in their kitchens) and brings in enough to buy more yarn to do it all over again.

hi Carrie - I would say that it depends on how long the scarf is - quite long does not tell me enough. Also depends on how long it takes you to knit one. I do knit myself - but I never sold anything. I made everything from BVabybooties to Pullovers with different collor patterns. It takes time and know-how. Figure out how much time is invested - also - are there patterns or are they plain ? If I knew more I could give you a better answer. But roughly 10-12 $ an hour ...... Muckerl
