WOW! Deep question. In a more abstract sense, I believe that as a society we have lost our ability to be shocked. It seems that with the overwhelming volume of information we have access to and the stories and events we are exposed to on an everyday basis, we are less likely to find ourselves surprised by anything. Even the most horrific or most heart-warming events are given but a moments notice and discarded. The pace of our lives allows for little time to reflect, acknowledge, and truly grasp information that should move us. Because of this it seems that we are less able to react to social injustice with the righteous anger and indignation of generations past. It is what we find shocking that we are most inclined to change. On the other hand, in our society today ( Amercian society that is), healthcare, or lack thereof, is our most serious problem.

Lack of personal responsibility.

Too many people today don't want to take any responsibility for their own actions. Society is always looking for someone to blame in every situation. A drunk causes and accident and someone sues the bar or the manufacturer. They are not responsible because they were only doing what they were created to do. The drunk is the only one responsible. People want to sue tobacco companies for lung cancer but, unless they were smoking before the 1970's when the surgeon general issued health warnings, the smoker is the only one to blame.

Many people are also looking for a free handout. Natural disasters occur such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding and people expect the government to step in and rebuild their homes. Where is the personal responsibility? Why didn't they have insurance? Don't tell me it is too expensive because the reason it is expensive is people build houses in places that are high risk. Take the risk, take the consequences.

Every negative in society is becoming a disease: like obesity and drug abuse. McDonald's has never made anyone fat. People are fat because they choose to eat at McDonald's. A personal choice deserves personal responsibility.

I would say prejudice. This would include prejudice against people of other cultures or color, people of a different sexual orientation, even people with different political views (i.e. dems vs gop) Prejudice of all forms is rampant in our country and it can cause economic issues as well. If an employer is looking to fill a position within their company, they tend to not call people with unique names, if they have an accent, etc.

The "Me, Me, Me" syndrome.

People do not care how their actions affect other people. They are rude, shallow, narrow minded, lying, backstabbing hypocrits. They lack morals, values, and common sense! Somewhere along the lines 'we' in general have forgotten how to be morally responsible human beings--it's sad!
