People don't want to be unmasked.
They like to make their comments then run away.
Usually because they have nothing to back it up.

I don't know if you are asking about IM or E-mail. I allow email because it does not show the email address. I don't want the crazies on this forum to know that. I don't allow IM because you then must expose your yahoo account.
I can only guess that some who don't allow email just don't want to receive racist or bigoted attacks. But then, you don't get those if you don't spew those or respond to trolls on Y!A.
