D. Peter the Great insisted on introducing many aspects of Western culture and language to the court and the nation. He even went so far as to ban the wearing of the traditional Russian beard unless one paid a very high tax and wore a permit allowing one to do so.

Peter the great ofcourse. DOn't ask russian this stupid question =) he was crasy about that. Changed calendar, made everyone selebrate newyear and have cristmas tree, then beards, yes. He created first fleet and regular army. Became involved in european politics. Tried to fight our beaurocrasy, corruption. Changed dress code. And so on.


ANd who is Ivan the great? YOu mean Ivan the terrible or whatever you call him in English?
