America was considered a 3rd world military power until 1943-1944 or so. It served us quite well. We had peace, for the most part, worked on economic and diplomatic problems that served America well, and, generally, performed as an instrument for peaceful existence with others.

Since you hold an MBA yourself, you could had probably answer your own question. Do you have to drag your feet regarding your status here? Anything else we donot know about you? Considered an influential son of what a congressman or a next kin of a senator?
Someone ask you where did you get the idea that the US is not a military power prior to world war2, imagine me I am not even an American yet I know since 19th century the US is a power to reckon with. A 3rd world power? Who is the first? Japan? Russia?Germany? You should have included the second and the first military power so that we could compare them here, so this is what MBA is teaching you there? See if only you didnot mention this, people wouldn't mention them. That is why sometimes in life secrecy is much more enjoyed by other people. Remember the golden rule, silence is golden.

Geography played a large role, and still does. It is very difficult and expensive to cross oceans to invade a country. But the US was a neutral country after WWI, believe it or not. Even prior to it's entrance in the war the US was unclear about whose side to join. Mexico was, and as many would argue still is, an adversary but not a military threat. Canada was a British protectorate and we had solid diplomatic realtions with the UK. No, our military was lackluster between the wars, our navy ranked number 5 I believe. It wasn't until the outbreak of WWII that the US felt a genuine threat to it's sovereignty which fueled the industrial might into the military. But basically the survived for two reasons: a lack of enemies and geography.

You are correct. Roosevelt's work plans had taken us out of the depression before WWII. Yes America was considered a power back then, however, it was no way considered a world power until after WWII.
The people of this country do not have nor have they ever had any interest in ruling the world like the British or the Roman empire. It is the politicians and the interestsof their allies in Middle Eastern dictatorships that have convinced the American govt. that they should mimic the British Empire of the 1800's.

We were an isolationist country. If we were to go back to that, anything bad that happens around the world we have to just stay out of it. That includes things like sending Peace Keepers, the military to do humanitarian relief like we did with the tsunami.
The other side is that Hitler was able to rise to power and we did nothing about it. The Japanese invaded China, setting the condition for WWII, and we just watched. When the war did comem, we were losing for the first two years. Thousands of our soldiers and citizens where taken prisoner and forced into slave labor camps.

We did just fine. We stayed over here and minded our own business because it was much more difficult to get here from Europe or Asia. Boats were the only way and it took a long time.
This ended when planes became much better and Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. We couldn't hide in our little corner of the world anymore.
I wish we would go back to letting the rest of the world fix their own problems though.

The problem with answering this question is that most of the answer is probably considered a state secret. At least the reasons 'why not'..."economic and diplomatic problems that served America well" could be a clue. That and untapped out resources.

Travel and communications were comparatively primitive. The US was well isolated from any potential enemies. Things changed greatly with the invention of guided missiles and instant communications. Don't long for the good old days.
