I've recently got broadband and bought a brand new macbook. Should I be installing some sort of online protection, firewall etc?

If anyone has any advise/recommendations that would be great!

OS X comes with a decent built in Firewall. You can activate it in the system preferences under Sharing.

There is a version of Norton Anti Virus which is just for the Mac.
I would recommend that you install it because, despite what some Mac fans say, they are not immune from viruses. It's just that hardly any have been written for them yet.

Give the evil little shits time and someone will hack a Mac big time and then it'll be too late for complaceny.

Your Macbook should also be able to run XP via Boot Camp. If you choose to do that then the anti-virus would be a good idea for the Windows software too.

Most modern routers contain a built in firewall that is often more secure than some software ones. You can 'train' them too.

OS X already has a firewall running by default. No need for anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. either, there are no known infections to worry about.

depends on the router you are using foryour broadband, most new ones have a built in hardware firewall which should be sufficient to stop you been hacked, you need to look your router up on the internet and see if it contains one if not use a free one like zonealarm.
