My husband and his ex spent a total of $500- it was uncontested, they used the same lawyer so it only cost them $250/each and there were children and property involved. This was in Mississippi.
If you two can agree on the property settlement and division of assets and child custody (if you have children) before you step foot into a lawyer's office it will be much cheaper than if you have to use a mediator or try to fight each other.

Each divorce is different and every state in the US has different laws governing the process.
Try looking up court fees for your state online - that'll give you the base costs. If you need a lawyer to help you, that'll obviously be more. The lawyer will want a 'retainer' to begin with and then you'll enter into an agreement based on hours spent on the case and other ancillary fees.
So far, my boyfriend's divorce has cost more than $10,000 and it's not over yet.
But - if you're able to do the divorce without a lawyer, it'll cost a lot less.

The cost of an average divorce would differ due to property, child support, spousal support...
However I can assure you of one fact and that is this, the average divorce will always be more costly than the marriage was.

It is a fact that a divorce costs a LOT more than it costs to work through whatever is troubling your marriage.

Mine was as cheap as chips. $420 to be exact. Too easy. Strangely enough, the logistics of getting divorced were a lot less hassle than it was getting married.

mine was close to 1000 dollars. and it was just basically for the lawyer to draw up the papers and for the filing fee. i wish i could have been the girl above with the 200.. however i live in mo and that was the cheapest i could find. been married for only 1.5 years so it was pretty simple too. good luck.

depends on contested or uncontested.
Uncotested-means all parties agree on everything prior to filing, in my state starts @ $495
Contested-means that the parties can't come to an agreement on anything and the cost depends on how much the lawyers have to get involved to mediate.

Mine was very simple. Neither one of us wanted anything from the other. The lawyer/filing fee was $185 and that was it.
