Duel Booting with Windows/Ubuntu is easy, i have that running on a handfull of my computers.
Goto the Ubuntu website (http://www.ubuntu.com/) and download the Ubuntu 7.04 live CD (about 700mb).
You can boot off this CD and use it as if it where running off a HDD and install it from the operating system, installing Ubuntu to a system already running another OS will automatically setup dual boot and you will have a choice when your computer loads. You may however run into troubles with getting Ubuntu to recognise your USB hard drive.
If you do have such troubles please visit the following websites:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty
http://ubuntuforums.org/
And search for your model of USB drive, or ask on the forums, the people are very friendly and always give advice.
If you have a spare HDD around (anything over about 4gig) i would recommend installing that and installing to that drive as it will probably be quite slow running an OS through USB.

Good luck, and welcome to Ubuntu!
