I would be tempted to lower my ego in the first place so that she does hers and we come down to a level where there is only love and compassion for each other.

Love is a union of two egoes as you say it. Hurting is a natural way for two people to love more. But the only wat to satisfy both partners not to hurt each other is to be good to oneself's and thinking first the thing to be done before doing it. You must first think that what you will do won't hurt your partner. However, this is far from reality because you are just humans that are subjective to human errors. Perfect love cannot be attatined because to err is human. The most you can do is always have an open communication to let love grow each day. That way you will minimize the pain of hurting one's heart from each other.

In Love the egos become one. It will then be impossible to hurt the other, because there is no other, so for there to be hurt at all one will have to become a masochist.

frued argued that the ego, the sense of self, was forever trying to satisfy both super ego and id.
therefore throwing in another wont make that much difference.

No. I think that is very cynical. I believe love could be defined as the desire of one 'ego' to care for another more than it does for itself. It is the complete transference of egotism onto the id of another person.

Notice that love is essentially a one way feeling. When it is reciprocated, it is wonderful, but it doesn't need reciprocation.
