Some months ago, I bought, intalled then disinstalled Zone Alarm because it slows down so much my computer. Now, fearing viruses, I re-installed it again. What a pain? Everything takes ages before popping-up. Is it normal to get slow down with anti-virus, firewall and other protective software? Is Zone Alarm worst than McAfee and Norton for that matter? (slowwww)

is is only zonealarm (firewall), or the zonealarm security suite? i have zonealarm (firewall), installed on every comp in my household (2 desktops, 2 laptops), and on most computers that i work on (friends/family), and have never had a problem with it at all. i've had norton security suite (with a brand new comp), and it took forever for the parental controls, etc. to load before i could connect to the internet.

could it be possible that you don't have enough ram?, how much stuff do you have on startup (on the taskbar by the clock)? how much ram do you have?

"Is it normal to get slow down with anti-virus, firewall and other protective software?" <-- yes, the more stuff that you have running (ie., messengers, music players, etc., etc.), the slower your system is going to be (especailly, if you are low on ram).

hit "ctl+alt+del", and on the "processes tab", at the bottom, how many processes do you have running, and your "cpu usage"? g/l, sos

Zone Alarm is not an AV program.
It is firewall....
from link
Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property. In fact, that's why its called a firewall. Its job is similar to a physical firewall that keeps a fire from spreading from one area to the next. As you read through this article, you will learn more about firewalls, how they work and what kinds of threats they can protect you from....
http://www.howstuffworks.com/firewall.htm

Suggest an AV program(Norton..McAfee).

I think that if you have been working on Internet with only ZONE ALARM between you and the world you probably got some other stuff onboard
your computer.....

re zone alarm
"ZoneAlarm lets you block uninitiated and unwanted traffic, even while your PC is unattended or while you're not using your connection. To further limit your exposure to attack, specify which applications can access the Internet. The program lets you stop e-mail-borne Visual Basic Script worms, too.
Notes:

It does not run on Windows Vista. You can download the Vista version here. Support for Windows 98 and Windows Me has been discontinued."

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

We security software like Zone Alarm adds a lot of information to your registry. If you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events has
a key. and that key need your PC's resources. So, if you should clean this up. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it. Also your Operating System will constantly try to fix these errors which cause spikes in CPU access.
