I just started an online college course which has instructed me to dowload several programs which I did. Open office is one of them. How do I open up some of the course files to view them through open office? this used computer was bought and given to me as a gift and already had microsoft office installed, but everytime I try to view anything for my class with microsoft office, it tells me I need a product key?? what do I do? please be specific! thank you.

What it means is the version of windows Office you had was a trial version and the trial has run out.
It means that for you to use Microsoft Office now you will need to purchase a retail version in the box and type in the product key that comes with it.

I agree with the other person, the trial version of urs have run out. You cant get the free version also, but i learned that either u should pay and download office or u have open office which is also useful. U can find that in this website, try this mate, may be its useful.

Right click on the file you want to open. Select "Open With". In the list, find the Open Office program you want to use, and check the box that says "always use the selected program." Good luck!
