Fresh water habitat has to contain two elements. First it must have a feeding sourse which means that it has to have some other water sourse feeding into it that is salt free in order to keep the oxygen level at peak performance. Then, it also has to have an emptying out sourse that allows it to stay balance by eliminating the extra water. The Great Lakes are a perfectly balanced Fresh Water source. They have rivers and streams that empty into them and also have run offs where they empty into other triburtaries. The water is constantly moving and therefore cannot stagnate. That is what fresh water means. It cleans itself of impurities by keeping its PH balance within normal limits.
