It is at the point where any age is not safe for a young person to be alone on foot. Where I live - NE Ohio - there are a number of reports each year of kids from elementary to high school ages being accosted by creeps. Though some people may not like to hear it - especially merchants who only allow "one student" in their store at a time - we live in an era where safety in numbers is a must.

That's a very good question and years ago when I was a child you could do that without fear of anything happening but now with the way the world is going and things in general adults are not safe so what chance to children have.
I would say late teens about 15 - 16 but it would be on how responsible they are drop a bollock or do something stupid I would monitor them.

I think it depends on the distance to school and the route they have to use. If it is a long distance and they have busy streets or bad neighborhoods then they should be much older. Where I live kids as little as 5 or 6 walk by all the time but it is not busy here and it is a very nice neighborhood.

11-12, Id say some time when the are in yr6, maybe the end of year six, but it really depends on how far they are going and how they are travelling and how far they have to walk.
But definitely by year 7 because a child needs to start taking responsibility and learn how to do things on their own. And getting to school by their self is one. Also its bad for your image your parents collect you in secondary school.

16 and responsible. Before that they should at least have one friend traveling with them. As one of the other people who answered said there are some crazy sicko's out there so you have to be careful. A small child should not travel to school with out a parent or a responsible adult that you trust.

I suppose it all depends where you are living and how far the school is from your home Where I used to live I walked my children to school until they were 9 and 11 and then walked them halfway where they would meet their friends as there was a road that was hard enough for me cross safely and there wasn't a lollie pop lady on that stretch of road.
Where we are living now I don't walk them to school,I would have no problem walking them, but they keep telling me I'm not allowed to and that they would die of embarrassment if I did.(they are 12 and 14 now).

It depends on where you live. If I were in a city, I wouldn't let my kids walk anywhere alone, but they can walk anywhere here.
I don't let my 7 year old go more than a block without her 11 year old sister though. People laugh at me for that. It's kind of a modern day Mayberry here. People look out for each other and each other's kids. And no, I won't tell you where it is. Gotta keep it safe.
