to homogenate the tissues, plants etc., to break the cells physically and collect the pellet or supernatent after centrifuge, and then used for research purpouse.

Its used to powder things. Anything from spices to herbs to medicines. It is not used as much in pharmaceuticals anymore but you can see the mortar and pestle in a lot of medical logos.

It's used in cooking to crush ingredients together.
