These bands made some great albums and music! Who cares if your friends don't like/listen to them. As long as you like them then listen all you want, and it doesn't matter that your 17. The people asking about your age are suprised I'm sure that someone younger likes this kind of music. You don't see that much these days. Younger people are usually into the new stuff or rap. I'm glad to see someone younger finding "older" music and appreciating it. It sure beats some of that crap musicians are putting out. Keep on rocking!! and listening to "classic rock" as they like to say.

Well, when i was 14-15 i finally broke free of the radio and discovered alot of stuff on my own, old and new. I figured thats what everyone did, guess not. Who cares what your friends think? As you get older, especially in the social circles where music is EVERYTHING, you will get alot of respect if you know bands from all across the board, like old 40s/50's country w/ danny reeves or merl haggard, old funk w/ stevie wonder, old hip hop w/ slick rick, Run DMC, etc. And all the classic rock, who without them you would not have the crap on the radio today. Other good classic rock bands to check out, especially w/ pop punk being the phase right now, try the stooges, velvet underground, the who, the kinks, MC5, alice cooper, they pretty much started the punk movement.
Older people will always be happy when younger people show an interest in things beyond themselves, it shows a level of maturity and open minded -ness not common w/ high schoolers anymore, and its been like that since there was music. Think of music like books, there's always something you havent read and the chances of it being amazing is pretty good, once you get out of the US it gets even better. Canada, britain and japan have some incredible rock n roll.
Edit: read through some answers, and other great blues would be muddy waters, screamin jay hawkins, and then there are newer jazz fusion bands like morphine, soul coughing,
Everything splits off itself in music, there are so many sub-genres it never ends. FLoyd and the stones are a great start, look up people that played w/ them. Show flyers are a lost art and a treasure map of bands.

Good for you! Not just that you like the music of my generation, but that you are not Blinded by the Light or criticism of friends, and you are willing to listen to varied music in general. Try some classical, some folk (I don't mean hillbilly - I mean like the '60s folk of Dylan, Baez, Collins) and some Pop-Folk like Paul Simon, Mary Chapin, Nanci Griffith, Gordon Lightfoot, Lyle Lovett, Hoyt Axton.
If you've got satellite radio, twist the dial and see what you can find. Don't just stick to the harder "Classic Rock" like those bands you mentioned - though they're great. Try to develop an appreciation for The Moody Blues, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton (as a solo act), Sting, Van Morrison, Springsteen, The Band, Grateful Dead and others that were/are a little softer than the hard bands like Sabbath, Poison, Metallica, etc.
Though almost in a category of their own The Beatles (if well selected) are still easy on the ears and relatable with their lyrics. Many of their contemporaries: Beach Boys ("Vibrations" and forward), Byrds, Manfred Mann, Monkees, Poco, Springfield and other top-40 acts of the mid-late '60s are also still very listenable.
Don't skip the '60s-'70s soul out of detroit and memphis, either. Ike & Tina, Supremes, Temptations, Marvin gaye, Manhattans, etc. all great stuff.
The fact that you are 17 and not totally influenced by your friend's taste speaks volumes about you and your maturity. You don't have to completely exclude some of today's music. Even at my advanced age, I think Jewel is very talented and also like quite a bit of the more pop-sounding radio music available from today's artists. I've even been known to listen to an Eminem song or two ;<)
Good luck and good listening!

My son is 17 and listens to classic rock, Zeppelin, The Who, and whoever else I turn him on to. The music is still good. The songs weren't written by old men, these guys were in their teens and 20's when most of the songs were written. It's nice to have 50 years of rock-n-roll to chose from.

Being that I was quite young when those bands started out I find it amazing that they have maintained their popularity for so long.I see people bringing their grandchildren to their concerts. I think it's fantastic. You are certainly not alone. I've spoken with quite a few young people that feel as you do. Although I don't care for them, look at all the "tribute" bands that are out there. It seems to me that most of today's bands are just trying to emulate the bands of yesteryear. They lack terribly in originality. There's not much in the way of good Rock anymore. Today's bands just seem to be carbon copies of each other. Do yourself a favor and get in to Blues music.

These bands are all good but some modern music is also good.
It is easy to say that music was better in the old days but you only remember the good bands.
Cilla Black was big in the 60's and Ken Dodd and Max Bygraves. If you ever listen to the top 10 from any week in the past there won't be any more decent songs than this weeks chart.

Classic rock is what you grew up with. I happen to like the fifties rock, as that is what I grew up with. Try Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley, to name a few. To me that is "Classic Rock."
