I would say in Malaysia the majority would claim to be able to communicate in English, but when you put them to the test... Bahasa Malaysia (or simply Malay) is the national language so everybody should speak it but recently some local politicians got rebuked by the government for not being able to properly express themselves in Malay... this is because Malay is the language of the Malays, who make up the majority of Malaysia's some 26 million inhabitants, but not the mother tongue of the people of Sabah and Sarawak, or that of the Chinese and Indians who are also Malaysians. Unfortunately Malaysia has only one official language - Malay - and thus many people don't bother to learn any other.
My motivation - uh, we got funny questions here, this 'travel section' has become more of a forum of the liberal thinkers and otherwise somewhat distorted geeks who have nothing better to do than sit in front of their computer...er...well, I have no TV, ok!

>>Why am I in Yahoo Answers...in English?
It is because Yahoo is international and the English Language is international too.
>>Am I a majority or a minority able to communicate in English?
I think I am middle-of-the road, that is, average...lol....majority yeah!!
>>But the REAL QUESTION is what is my motivation to participate in an English site??????
y other languages or dialects....even though English in NOT my first language.....Secondly, the main motivation is FUN and KNOWLEDGE.
I am not a French Canadian but English is just as highly important here too. Both English and Malay languages are officials.....lol.

I hope my answer would enlighten you so much so that you would realise that this is the Malaysian section in Yahoo Answers.... :~)

There are many people who do not speak Malay here. So if we decide to use Malay, known as Bahasa Malaysia, here then it wouldn't be fair to non-speakers who wish to participate.
The level of English here varies - but it doesn't matter as long as we are able to understand each other. Honestly in Malaysia the number of people who can speak, read and also write proper English without spelling and grammatical errors is very small - you can call it a minority.
My motivation to participate in an English site? The motivation has nothing to do with language, just that there are some interesting questions and answers here:). In fact, I think in English - it is my mother tongue because it is the first language my mom taught me as a kid.

If you consider all the people and languages of the earth, then English is a minority. I am part of the group. Why participate in this forum - - - I enjoy sharing the limited knowledge I have of computers and networking. It can be very frustrating for new users and the technology is new to most people. Have several years (27) of computer build and support as well as system administration, desktop support and networking. Helps me stay active in retirement.

This is meant to be a travel section, so if for example someone from the US or the UK wants to know about a certain place or hotel it would be quite pointless if somebody replies in Malay of Chinese etc, wouldn't it?
