I recently went to bintan for a holiday. When i went for a swim in the water facing the south china sea, the water kept on changing from warm to cold then warm again every few feet i swam.

Natural bodies of water seldom have a uniform temperature. Above 39 degrees F, warmer water rises. Surface water absorbs more heat from sunlight than deeper water. Underground springs often surface in a body of water.

The water on the surface is warmer than it is a foot or so down. As you swim, you stir up the water bringing the cool water up.
