If you take good care of your battery, it will last longer. Laptop users seldom do.

Running the laptop on power much of the time is bad for the battery. If you are going to be plugged in, you should remove the battery to prevent overcharging.

Read the documentation that came with your laptop, or visit

Batteries will last for years but only if you look after them properly. At least once a month run the laptop on only battery power until you get a warnin to rechare the battery and then fully charge the battery in one go. This will keep the batteries in best condition. If your friend does this charge/discharge cycle 2 or 3 times now he will find his battery time improves a lot.

It sounds like battery memory to me
try running the battery completely flat
a few times it may recover it was a problem with earlier
batteries maybe the manufacturers have cut down on the quality of the battery so they can sell the laptop cheaper.

well, it all depends on the type of battery as there are various types and methods for their use.

Rechargable Lithium ion batteries work best if they dont fully discharge

NIMH work best if they are charged at any part of the cycle and they dont need to be fully charged either.

NIcad require FULLY DISCHARGING and FUCLLY RECHARGING each time the battery is used.

If you dont do this with NICAD then you wil get a very short life.

With NIMH and LI-ion they seem to work best if they are almost flattened completely and then fully charged about every 10 charges.

I have 2 LI-ion slaptop batteries that I have had for 3 years and they are still going great, also 2x NIMH slaptop batteries that I have had for over 5 years and they are all still going strong!
