Fish (except sharks) do not have eyelids, so it is hard to tell if they sleep. If they DO sleep, they do not sleep like we do. They rest. According to certain sources, fish “sleep” by blanking out their minds and daydreaming while floating and hiding around coral or plants. A clown loach doesn't seem to hide his snoozing, (I'm sure any clown loach owner has seen, they sometimes tend to rest on the bottom of the aquarium on their sides, appearing to be dead or sick), but this is just one of the positions that use naturally while resting. It has also been suggested that aquarium fish "take a rest" when the lights are turned out, although again, it's never been proven that they actually "sleep" (in the way we humans consider sleeping). So if you see your fish just hanging out in one spot not doing too much, I would think it's safe to assume that he's more then likely taking a rest. If you don't catch your fish doing this, I'm sure your fish are resting while you are too. I myself have seen my fish do this, mostly after I turn the tank lights out and go back in with a flashlight. I hope this helps. Good luck! ;o)

you have definately witnessed your fish sleeping. they sleep all the time. wth lighs on or off. if they are relatively inactive, they are sleeping. however fish do not sleep for extended periods of time like us humans. the sleep more times in a day than we do and shorter intervals. Today alone i caughta fish sleeping near the surface. another fish started jabbing at him and he must have been in a nice dream about sucking on gravel because he didn't want to come out of it. I almost got the net and flushed him but the the automatic feeder dumped some food and he woke up and started going crazy. afterward i watched him and he was completely normal. it was pretty sweet, cuz i was sad he was dead. what a con artist, he just wanted to see what a trip down the porcelan highway is like.

Ok, they do not sleep, they are in a suspended animation, there system slows down sort of like ours when we sleep only they don't eye lids so its not technically sleeping. They also still move a little to keep there selfs afloat. Also if your room as a little bit of light in it then the fish might not do this. My fish room(aka my basement) is pitch black when they do it.

Fish (with a few exceptions) don't sleep. Some Parrot-fishes(but not all) will secrete a mucus coating and lie on the bottom as if asleep. But no one has done the science to see if they are really sleeping or just trying to avoid predators by covering their scents.

i think they sleep like midwater if you study them day and night without making noises and such youll be able to see them they just hover in water .if it was the sea you would sea the currents taking them

They sleep in short lapses. They don't have eye-lids so they don't shut their eyes. They just float around
