My friend and I have been professional poker players for a few years. We decided we should get a mid sized yacht and sail around the world. This would work out great if we could get set up with realtime internet access so we could play poker online. I've looked around a bit but it doesnt seem like this is an option. They have satellites plans that let u do email and send OR recieve data but not really both. I dont need fast internet, just constant realtime 2-way internet!

And who is your ISP out in the middle of the ocean? Sattellite is the best you can do while sailing. I'm a long way from the ocean, but I assume the better marinas have hotspots.

The only way to do it is with the satellite plans you mentioned. It's rather slow and prone to disconnects (as you move around you wind up getting out of range of the one you were connected to, then the device has to hunt for the next one in range).

It does work, but I'm not sure you would want to do anything real-time over it.

satellite is the only way. Mobile/cell phone cards are the other option, but their signals won't carry that far.
