WINDOWS XP
I was running a new scan last night that was supposed to get rid of spyware, but it got rid of everything else. The Recycle bin and MY DOCUMENTS icon are gone. They still work, but the icons are gone, and when I go into 'Write' to insert a picture in the mail it no longer shows MY DOCUMENTS or PICTURES or anything like that. When I click 'start' and then 'programs' it's all empty. I've tried to run a System Restore, but all it said was, "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please reset your computer, and then run System Restore again.' and i have reset it several times, but it doesn't work, and reinstalling WINDOWS isn't a possibility. Is there anything else that I can do? Why is it when I go into 'Add and Remove Programs' things like the Flash player and WINDOWS Media Player aren't there, but they still work? Lots of things still work. Are all my files hidden or something? Oh, and nothing works in 'run' I tried msconfig, but I get the same screen.

if you do not have the recovery disc, you are in trouble i am afraid, that is the ONLY thing you can do is format the drive 7 times to clean the machine up,as for as your other 'stuff',afraid its all gone, format back to factory level,if you do not have the disc get in touch with your brands support team and they will or may send you a disc

Hi there,
There's the easiest way to get everything back.
That's you have to use the WindowsXP CD to repair your current WindowsXP.
Notepad, Windows Media Player, Messenger, Calculator ... are programmes that can't be seen in "Add / Remove Programs". Because they're always in WindowsXP after setting up the WindowsXP, that's a pack of WindowsXP !
In order to use "System Restore" in WindowsXP, you have to set the time right after to install WindowsXP completely.
Good luck !

Something like this happened to me last year. I sent my hard drive over to a data-recovery guy, somebody who knows how to do computer forensics. He was able to recover important files, but he told me to just buy a new drive and chuck the old one. If your goal is to recover important personal files, you need to get help from someone who knows how to recover data--even files that seem to have disappeared into thin air, I think they can be recovered as long as the drive has not yet been reformatted.
The bottom line is, I think, even if you're able to get back your personal files, you will have to reformat anyway. Good luck.

What's the name of that new scan? I'd like to avoid it like the plague. Your software is severely damaged, it sounds like your registry is corrupted. I know you said that reinstalling Windows is not an option, but without it, you now have a doorstop.
