Becoming a Teachers can be a worthwhile move.

They are paid throughout the year even though there are blocks of time when they don't work.

What most people fail to realise is that e.g. the summer holidays is when Teachers get ready for the new Term.
The shorter breaks is when they catch up on things like marking.

Teachers don't do as MUCH work in holiday time, but they still work.

It depends on how you look at it.

Teachers get a set salary to teachwhat in most states is 180 days (although this varies state to state - when I taught in MO it was 175) plus 10 or so teacher work days. You also have included in your contract a specific amount of sick days you are allowed to take.

This salary is divided up into equal checks - anywhere from 18-24 depending on how a district handles the pay. Some only distribute checks Sept. - May, others distribute checks year round. And others have any number of methods in-between.

Each check is the same - as it is the salary amount divided by the number of checks. It doesn't matter if there is a holiday or not. The only exception is if you go over your sick days, they dock your pay a daily rate accordingly. There is no "overtime" unless you are hired for a paid extra duty (i.e. coaching a team, after school tuturoing program, etc.) This is added into your paycheck, but not part of your contract.

So YES - you get a check for the same amount each time therefore you still get "paid" when there are holidays, but NO because those holidays aren't included in your contract. You are getting paid for a specific number of days.

"Paid holidays" really only come into play when you are an hourly employee. Any salaried employee gets paid a lump sum to work a specific job, and holidays/vacation/sick leave are just days that they don't have to report to work.

Not really. Teachers get paid for "X" number of days in the school calendar. Holidays, weekends, summer are not included in the total days taught. It used to be that some teachers had to teach say 30 school "days" before they were paid. But if for some reason it took 40 calendar days to get those in, then the teacher would not get paid until the 40 day period. Now, most districts take the salary and divide it so the teacher gets a regular pay check each two weeks. However, that take home amount is smaller than what they earn if divided by "X" days taught. So, teachers are not paid for holidays if they are not included in the school calendar. Even though teachers are paid year round, they are earning only for say 190 days taught.
