The "average" Americans have no one but themselves to blame for the mess they perceive themselves as being in. They've become too complacent with the status quo for so long that it's basically allowed the major parties to run amok in every level of government and be only answerable to their financial backers and special interests.

The last two Presidents to look out for the American people were the Roosevelts. Teddy put an end to the robber barons and FDR put an end to the great depression by putting Americans back to work. I can't think of another President since FDR that has truly helped the American people. Greed and corruption has always existed in our government, now it's just blatant, practiced with arrogance.

Both parties are in it for fattening their own pockets with the special interest groups. They ignore what we want on a regular basis, even stupid enough to try it repeatedly (look at the immigration amnesty bill Congress tried to run through at least one or two more times AFTER the average Americans told them what they could do with that bill).
They claim to be for us until the election, then after that we're just a nuisance.

The Republican Party has perfected the art of ridicule, lies, and manipulation of the public to keep a majority in Congress while they use their political positions to give themselves everything they are taking away from the public such as health care to name one. They have blocked all efforts of the Democratic Party to accomplish upgrading life for the Average American. In public they disagree with the President and his policies and then rubber stamp anything he wants.
The billions of dollars the Republicans want to send to Iraq would pay for all improvements needed in education, environment, health care, homelessness, transportation including upgrading all our bridges and tunnels, security and dealing with natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Let us not forget immigration that is draining our resources and the Republicans refuse to enforce the laws that are already on the books.
Sorry for such a long answer but the only ones that are in it for themselves are the Republicans.

Because of the elitist nature of modern politics, and its close ties with big corporate actors, the average American is no longer seen as the prime actor in politics (which he should be in a democracy), but simply as a commodity to be fought over between the parties.

No, just the republican party.
It took the GOP 12 years to screw things up this bad, it'll take the democrats 12 years to fix it.
