ive had a coil fitted, after being sterilised, to slow down periods, i had it fitted about 2months ago now, but seem to be very emotional, where as i never used to be like this, i was wondering is it due to the hormone that is in the coil (iud) or is it something to do with being sterilised?

I put my hands to my head in despair when I hear of women being sterilised and then needing a coil. Sort of defeats the whole object really! You could have avoided the risk of surgery and anaesthetic and the fact that statistically women who are sterilised have a higher incidence of period problems, pelvic pain and future hysterectomy, by just having the Mirena coil instead. Did they warn you of ANY of these risks pre-operatively, I bet they didn't!

Too late for you now but the only correct spelling of sterilisation is V-A-S-E-C-T-O-M-Y. And yes this is a man speaking!

The Mirena releases very small amounts of progesterone, theoretically this can affect both mood state and libido.

Anything to do with your hormones can make you upset and emotional. It is very difficult to be certain in this case that it is the IUD rather than having been sterilised. You have not given enough details to make that call. Hoever a few things you can try-
Take the IUD out and see if your emotions become more stable. If you need another way of dealing with heavy periods there are plenty of other methods.
If you have been having lots of heavy bleeding up until the IUD then you could just be over tired. Have you tried taking some iron tablets to help with the iron you will have lost through the heavy bleeding. Also try taking some vitamin b complex tablets. These will help you deal with stress and reduce the emotional ups and downs until your hormones settle down a bit.
You do not have to try all of these things at once, if you want to keep the IUD in and try and settle down your emotions first before taking it out then try the iron and vitamin B complex first.
If you still have problems after a couple of weeks and you have tried all of these things then it is time to talk to your doctor about other alternatives.

It could be a combination of both but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say. Also, ask them about taking B6 in a bottle by itself or as part of a bottle of B Complex because it (the B6) can be very good at helping the emotional feelings you are describing.

I have the coil.. I feel emotionally cool w/it.
Tough for me to judge how I was in the beginning with it because I was having cancer treatment and my mom had recently died .. who wouldn't be emotional then
