They are both still in the NYC metro area. They just moved to a suburb like most NFL teams but kept the name of the metro area because its recognizable. It just happens that the suburb is in New Jersey on the other side of the river.
The Detroit Lions played in Pontiac for years. If I asked about the Pontiac Lions people would think I'm stupid. The Redskins don't play in DC. The Cowboys don't play in Dallas.
Oakland and Los Angles are several hours apart and different metro areas. Go look at a map to figure out why they changed the name.
The NJ Nets and Devils aren't trying to be a NYC team so they use New Jersey. Until the Nets move to Brooklyn and change their name.

There are a couple of reasons. Mainly, the legal issues of the Names "NEW YORK" Giants / Jets go back to the league issues and how they set up their franchisees. When these teams were acquired and / or sold, they were the "New York" Giants / Jets so that is where the name sticks. On the Madison Avenue side of things, it is only intuitive to keep the 'branding' of the team with the bigger marketing prize, and that no doubt would be New York vs. Jersey. Nothing against Jersey, but if you were in charge of selling Chad Pennington Jerseys, which city would you want on it? Think of the Oakland / LA Raiders fiasco back in the day. So, answer is both Legal Rights and Common Sense.

franchise wrights.
The teams are called the
NY Giants Football team back in the 1950s incoporation
same with the jets from 1965.
So they keep the corp names and play in jersey.
I am ex Jersey and not a big deal ... Actually now that I live out west sometimes say I am from NY easier for the people to comprehend that New Jersey.
Do not panic. It is a legal stuff.
Just enjoy the games.

Unlike the Raiders the move was because there was no more room for a new football stadium in New York so the city and teams decided to move the Staduim to New Jersey. The Raiders moved for money and moved hundreds of miles away. The meadowlands in only a few miles outside New York. And unlike the Angles the Giants and Jets are orignally from New York so they have a right to the name. The Angles were always based in Anaheim and have no right to the LA name.

It has got to do with marketing. The New York market is more appealing and bigger than the New Jersey market. It is also held in a better light than New Jersey. It is basically the same principle as the Angels referring themselves to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

It is because of the proximity to the city and tradition. The new stadium will be in New York and everything will be fine. This has nothing to do with New Yorkers. This was purely an NFL decision

In the everyday fast pace of life in the city, one can only guess that they have to be a little slow in other areas.
