Roger won his quarter final against Andy Roddick in straight sets. His 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory sends him against Russia's Nikolay Davydenko on Saturday and places him just two victories from becoming the first man to win four consecutive U.S. Opens since Bill Tildon won six straight from 1920 to 1925.

"There was so much good serving that it's hard to say it was great, great tennis," Roger said. "But I thought it was a high level. You couldn't allow yourself to make any easy mistakes because they would be costly."

The first two sets featured sizzling skill from the service line as neither player lost a game on his own delivery and both sets went to tiebreaks. Roger won the first 7-5 and the second 7-4 against the American he defeted in last year's final. Our top seed then claimed the first service break of the high intensity match in the sixth game of the third set when Roddick sailed a backhand long to fall behind 4-2. Roger broke Roddick again for good measure in the last game when the American netted a backhand on match point to end the contest after just over two hours.

Not since 1988 had no U.S. man failed to reach the final of any of the season's four Slams. Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Todd Martin, Mal Washington and Roddick himself had reached finished runner-up or won majors during the 18 years preceding 2007.

Andy Roddick played the game of his life and still lost in straight sets

"Roddick tried landing 71 percent of his first serves for the match and a remarkable 81 percent in the second set. He tried committing zero double faults and just 24 unforced errors over three sets. He tried holding serve and avoiding even a single break point through the first two sets. He tried taking good, calculated chances at the net and hitting as crisp and authoritative a backhand as we've seen from him. He tried wearing black."

It must be very frustrating for players to play the game of their life and do everything right against Federer only to see it result in pushing the guy to play just a bit better than usual.
Roddick did well and tried very hard. He has nothing to reproach himself for. Great game and some good tennis but Fed has Rod's number.
We will possibly have to admit that we are seeing the almost perfect tennis machine as embodied in Roger Federer!

Both A-Rod and Fed appeared in black, giving them a sinister appearance and heralding what was to follow, and threw all they had at each other. They played a tight, controlled match, the first 2 sets ending in closely fought tie-breakers. Roger took the tiniest chances he saw in each tie-breaker. It was a "bridge too far" from then on. Roger won in straight sets- 7-6,7-6,6-2 to remain 14-1 against A-Rod. it was however closer than the score suggests.

Federer did but those first two sets were absolutely amazing. I really thought Andy was going to keep it up for the 3rd til he ran out of gas.

Even if you didn't see it, take a guess...

Actually, Federer won over two players:

Roddick + Jimmy Connors
