A-Rod's Heroics Lift Yanks Past Mariners

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez had a night befitting legends.

The Yankees planned to take him out of the starting lineup because of his sprained right ankle, but A-Rod talked his way in. Then he homered twice in an eight-run seventh inning to lead New York over Seattle 10-2 Wednesday night and help the Yankees open a three-game lead over the Mariners in the AL wild-card race.

Rodriguez arrived at Yankee Stadium limping following a collision with Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre on Tuesday, and the team's medical staff sent him downtown for an MRI exam. Rodriguez pronounced himself "ready to roll" and was upset that he had to go for the scan.

About an hour before game time, Yankees manager Joe Torre said A-Rod likely would be limited to pinch-hitting duty. Rodriguez then tested his ankle with a few jogs in right field while the Mariners were finishing batting practice. He ran in foul territory toward the dugout, up a runway and into the Yankees' clubhouse.

"I've got to talk to the manager," he said with a determined look, never stopping as he went through the door.

He walked and popped out in his first two plate appearances against Jarrod Washburn (9-13). Then, with the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Rodriguez hit a 3-2 fastball over the retired numbers behind the fence in left-center. Pinch-hitter Jorge Posada's bases-loaded walk off Sean Green put the Yankees ahead, and New York padded the margin on Johnny Damon's run-scoring grounder, Melky Cabrera's RBI single and Derek Jeter's two-run double.

Rodriguez then drove a 2-1 pitch from Brandon Morrow into the left-field seats for a two-run homer. He rounded the bases, received congratulations in the dugout and emerged for his second curtain call of the inning.

His first homer tied Mel Ott on the career list, and his second matched Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 17th place at 512. Rodriguez, who leads the majors with 48 homers and 134 RBIs, had the 51st multihomer game of his career and became the first Yankees player to homer twice in an inning since Cliff Johnson on June 30, 1977, at Toronto.

Detroit's Magglio Ordonez and San Francisco's Bengie Molina also accomplished the feat this season.

No doubt that A-rod should be the MVP of the AL.

However, many of the sports writers hate the yankees and don't vote for any of there players.

EX. Matsui for rookie of the year 2003
Cano for rookie of the year 2005
Jeter for MVP last year. 2006

Don't be surprised if Magglio wins the MVP. Should be A-rod he is clearly better this year.

No. specific, A-Rod has been extensive for the Yankees this 300 and sixty 5 days, yet by using his hip harm he hasn't been putting up the numbers he often does, and he hasn't performed many of the 300 and sixty 5 days. He helped out Teixeira and greater the full lineup while he decrease back, yet he has no longer publish MVP numbers. he continues to be, even while approximately 80%, yet up above known numbers and could nevertheless possibly get to 30 residing house runs and a hundred rbi, yet no longer MVP form numbers. he's been very efficient, yet you could say the comparable approximately Hughes, who became the pen around. Does that advise he must be the MVP? No. The MVP purely does not artwork that way. that is predicated just about completely on numbers, with a sprint greater attention in the experience that your on a triumphing group.

ARod will win the American League MVP this yr, and it will probably be unamous. He deserves it with the type of yr he is having, and being the driving force behind the Yankees ascent in the wild card race after a lackluster first 100 games.. I am neither a Yankees or ARod fan but the numbers bear it out. I think Ordonez, Victor Martinez and Guerreo will be in the hunt for second place.

I would say A-Rod is the fave since he will guide his team to the playoffs with one of the best all-around offensive seasons in history, tho Magglio Ordonez is having a helluva season. Downside for him is Tigers are staying home for the postseason (unless they can come up with a 13-4 streak here).

No doubt a-rod is a.l. mvp. Not only is he leading the universe in hr, rib, runs, and slugging%, but many of his hits have come in clutch situations. 2 walk off hr's, one a grannie. he came into spring training leaner and determined to make up for last year. He became the youngest player ever to reach 500 home runs and has a real shot at 60 this year. Then there's the matteer of his gold glove worthy year at third base. not only should he be mvp, but it should be uninamous.

A-rod is a lock for the MVP. The early-season hype has carried through the whole year. Between that, the 500th home run and his high-profile Yankees recent play will result in him earning the award.

Depends on who makes the playoffs. If Arod does, give him the award. If the Tigers win the wild card over the Yanks, give it to Magglio. The player people forget is Ichiro. The M's look like they wont make the playoffs but if they do over the Yanks and Tigers, give it to Ichiro.

If Alex doesn't get the AL MVP award its a fix and should be investigated. No one has better numbers except for batting average and thats the only category Ordonez leads in.
