It was a very common car, so that leaves me to wonder if they will be caught at all?

Having the license number might help but even this is not guaranteed. I once was rear ended and the car took off. I chased the car down and got the license number. Afterwards I called the police who came out to take my report. After checking the plate number, they told me that the number had expired and there was nothing they could do about it. Sounded fishy to me, but what could I do.

If you do have the license number, you might have a chance. Without it I would say your chances are very slim.

It's probably a good idea to file a police report for a hit and run for insurance reasons and so on. The chance of them being caught will depend on how much you can remember about the car, such as color, model/make, any characteristics that make it stand out like premium wheels and what the driver looked like. That and how backed up the police are since it really isn't a case that takes high priority, although you may not be the first. At any rate good luck.

If you got their number plate and a decent description of the car then it's probably not going to be a problem finding them.

Yeah, if you got their license plate and vehicle description then it is very likely. But if you didnt get a license plate, then maybe 5 percent chance.
