Ummm... because they are....
Are you really free? Your purchases, library books, as well as your internet usage is all under survelence. Bush administration has ADMITED they gather this information for 'our protection'.
The truth is, he who controls the money, controls the world. The centralization of wealth, as well as the private bankers who run the federal reserve (which is a private bank and NOT part of the government) have tremendous amount of power over our day to day lives. They control the economy through monitary supply, inflation control, as well as collecting all of our tax dollars as payment for interest from the money they print..
America has reached out its arm, and forces other countries to comply with our demands. It controls other countries through puppet governments as well as funding rebellions, arming both sides of a civil war and imposing trade sanctions against those who do not comply.
It is those pratices that have made america one of the most hated countries in the world. They dont hate us because of our freedoms.. (as if we still have any)... they hate us because we took away their freedoms, stole their natural resources, and ignored the soverignty of their country.

The business of government is to run the country. People look to the political leaders to make decisions that have a general effect on our lives. Fortunately we live in a country where we still have choices as to how and where we live. When a city or area of our nation is hit by a catastrophe of the magnitude of a national disaster such as Katrina we look to the government for answers and assistance. But government is finite. There is only so much that the government can do. It is still up to local people to help themselves as much as possible. My heart goes out to the people of the gulf coast,(I was born in Pascagoula, Miss.), but I'm afraid the real rebuilding will be done by those most affected. All too often when then government gets involved it more or less takes over the recovery efforts. And that means a vast burearocracy gets involved, and then things get bogged down. A lot of money gets wasted, and people who are suffering the most wind up losing out. It remains for creative energetic locals to pull themselves out of the disasterous situation.

I will not even comment on the "whats worst" answer, way too easy.
At this point some people have become so dependent on the government that they do need them to run their lives. Witness New Orleans, the place is till in shambles. The only thing they have done towards rebuilding the city is complain about the President and hold out their hands for more of our money.
The government is not suited to run the daily lives of Americans, when it does it creates useless human beings.

It depends upon the individual and what they have been taught. It is in the best continuing interests of any government to have its citizens live their lives with the firmly implanted belief that their continued survival depends upon the government and its many arms.
In large part, this is accomplished through the education system in which young people begin their formal indoctrination. The dogma of indespensible government is planted and nurtured in such young fertile minds and then reinforced via televised and printed news outlets. That you have thought to even ask such a question is a basis for hope.

Because they fail to realize that the government is not the highest level of justice, power and supremacy. Psalms:121:1: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
Psalms:121:2: My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Psalms:121:3: He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Psalms:121:4: Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalms:121:5: The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
Psalms:121:6: The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
Psalms:121:7: The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
Psalms:121:8: The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
