The definition of a minority is technically the historically disadvantaged. In America, for example, African-Americans were brought here into slavery and as a result many of them remain in inner cities -- uneducated, poor, and on the streets. Many Hispanic people are the same way too... particularly because of the immigration laws we have. And Native Americans have been pushed onto reservations and kept there ever since the white men came to the USA. So these people are given special consideration for this reason. For people like us Asians and Indians who are known to do well and educate ourselves, they don't give us special consideration because we have a historical record of doing well.

It is because Asian-Americans are more likely than other groups to apply and be accepted to college anyway. The thought was always that Caucasians and Asian-Americans didn't need help to get into college. Now, though, it isn't really a problem because no one "gets points" for being minority.

Probably because we have a large number of Asian people in Australia. I think each Asian country should probably be considered separately as individual minorities tho, unless there are enough for them not to be considered one.

I agree with smashley. You should be proud to be acceptted into a school based on your merits and not your race. I have met too many "dumb" people who get lots of chances when they were not the least qualified. In fact, a lot of them ended up dropping out or getting kicked out for poor grades or social misconduct. It all results in wasted time for the college and a lost opportunity for someone else who could have been considered.

I think that you are right, because there are already lots of Asians that apply, they don't need special help. Also, I think on average they come from wealthier families, and go to better schools.
